Primary Purpose:
The Manager Compensation is responsible for managing the compensation function for management employees. The Manager Compensation plays a pivotal role in developing and implementing new and revised compensation programs, policies and procedures to align with the company's goals and competitive practices. This position is also responsible for ensuring that company compensation programs are consistently administered and communicated in ways that enhance Norfolk Southern’s employee value proposition enabling the ability to attract, retain and motivate top talent, and in compliance with government regulations.
Principal Duties:
- Manages the ongoing administration of Norfolk Southern’s compensation programs for management positions, including annual merit salary reviews, the Management Incentive Plan and other annual incentives, and long-term equity incentive awards and administration.
- Analyzes and evaluates issues related to compensation programs, recommends creative and appropriate revisions and solutions to senior management, and oversees the formal adoption and implementation of approved changes.
- Provides effective advice and counsel to departmental management on administering the compensation programs.
- Provides guidance and direction to the Compensation Analyst in the performance of their duties.
- Evaluates and assesses market compensation levels for all Norfolk Southern management positions, including those in the Management Incentive Plan.
- Coordinates with third-party service providers, such as employee recognition administrator, equity compensation administrator, and market compensation data providers.
- Monitors the effectiveness of existing compensation practices and recommends changes that are cost-effective and consistent with compensation trends and corporate objectives.
- Develops and implements effective techniques for compiling, analyzing, preparing and presenting data to inform decisions on and evaluate the effectiveness of compensation programs.
- Oversees the company’s participation in compensation surveys, monitors compensation survey data, and assesses and makes recommendations on market compensation data sources to ensure corporate compensation objectives are achieved.
- Ensures compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting compensation programs and practices.
- Collaborates with other departments with administrative and reporting duties related to compensation programs, including: Payroll, Treasury, Corporate Accounting, Tax, Financial Planning & Analysis, Law, and the Corporate Secretary.
- Assists in preparing materials and reporting for the Board’s Compensation Committee and senior management (CEO, CHRO, CFO), as assigned.
- Assists in developing compensation data and information for the company’s annual Proxy Statement, 10-K annual report, and other public filings.
